Official Obama White House Instagram Account Compromised by Hacker
The official Instagram account for the Obama White House, @obamawhitehouse, was reportedly targeted by a hacker on Sunday. The unauthorized individual posted a series of AI-generated memes and content to the account, which had been dormant since 2017.
Among the unauthorized posts was an AI-generated image suggesting the White House was under Shiite control. The hacker also used the account’s Instagram Stories feature to disseminate additional content. A representative for Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has confirmed that the account has since been secured and all the disruptive material has been removed.
History of Account Vulnerabilities and Past Incidents
This is not the first time the @obamawhitehouse account has faced security challenges. It was previously compromised in July 2020, an incident that also affected the accounts of prominent figures like Joe Biden, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk. During that earlier breach, the compromised accounts of Gates and Musk were used to promote Bitcoin payment scams.
The 2020 cryptocurrency fraud attempt prompted Twitter, now known as X, to temporarily restrict its verified accounts. At the time, the FBI acknowledged awareness of the “security incident involving several Twitter accounts, belonging to high-profile individuals,” and indicated that the perpetrators’ aim was to “perpetuate cryptocurrency fraud.” The bureau advised the public against falling victim to such scams by sending cryptocurrency or money.
The individual responsible for the 2020 hack, Joseph James O’Connor from the UK, pleaded guilty in the United States to charges including computer intrusion, wire fraud, and extortion. He was sentenced to five years in prison in 2023. Following his arrest in Spain in 2021 and subsequent extradition, British authorities later obtained a civil recovery order to seize approximately $5.4 million worth of Bitcoin and other crypto assets linked to the scam.
