Sarah Ashlee Barker Reflects on LA Return, Personal Growth
For the first time since her selection in the expansion draft, Sarah Ashlee Barker made her return to the familiar grounds of Crypto.com Arena on Sunday to face her former team, the Los Angeles Sparks. While her jersey now represents the Portland Fire, the emotions tied to returning to the place where her professional journey began remained palpable.
“When I landed here, my heart felt warm,” Barker shared. “I love this place. I love the organization, and I love the people I’ve gotten to know.” The second-year guard spent her inaugural season in Los Angeles before embarking on a new chapter with Portland.
Evolving Playstyle on Display
Despite the Portland Fire ultimately falling short against the Sparks, Barker’s reappearance underscored the significant evolution of her game and confidence throughout her second WNBA season. Making her second start of the current year, Barker once again demonstrated why she has become a cornerstone player for Portland, showcasing remarkable versatility.
While her shooting touch was not on full display, Barker found numerous other avenues to influence the game. She contributed seven assists, three rebounds, a steal, and a block, continuing to highlight the all-around style of play that has become her signature since joining the Fire. Her passing, in particular, was a standout element, with each assist reflecting her keen court vision and ability to orchestrate scoring opportunities for her teammates.
Mindset Shift Fuels Development
This willingness to contribute in any capacity the game demands is a testament to the mindset Barker has cultivated throughout her young career, a mindset largely shaped during her time in Los Angeles. “At the end of the day, it’s not about who starts,” Barker stated. “Whatever opportunity I’m given, I’m going to play with 100 percent effort and be who I am every time I step on the floor.”
The transition to Portland has brought about notable changes, which Barker believes have been instrumental in her development. “The training we do and how we practice is completely different than what I’m used to, and I’m very blessed for it because new things create new growth,” she explained. The most significant difference in her second year, according to Barker, has been her mental approach. “It was never that I didn’t have confidence in myself,” she elaborated. “I think I just took the pressure off myself and understood, ‘Go play the game that I love.’ Every single day, I get to do what I love.”
Barker’s return to Los Angeles, the city where her professional path first began, served as a poignant reminder that while team affiliations may shift, personal growth and the cultivation of relationships endure. Observers anticipate her continued progress throughout the season.
