Analyst Foresees Player Option Opt-Outs
Despite their contributions, both Ayton and Smart may soon be testing the open market. According to NBA analyst John Hollinger, both players are anticipated to exercise their contract options to become free agents in 2026. Hollinger points to the financial implications for both players.
“Ayton signed a bargain deal with the Lakers that he massively outplayed and should be up for a reward in the free-agent market as a result,” Hollinger wrote. “He’ll be among the most gettable starting centers on the market.”
Regarding Smart, Hollinger noted, “Smart signed his deal with a player option with the idea that he could get a payday this summer if he played well. He did. His current valuation suggests he can confidently test the market.”
Player Value and Lakers’ Priorities
The question now arises as to which player the Lakers should prioritize. Analysis suggests that Smart proved to be the more impactful player for the team throughout the season. While Ayton demonstrated flashes of brilliance, notably in a strong series against the Houston Rockets, he also experienced periods of inconsistency, including being outplayed by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Smart, conversely, provided value that extended beyond statistics, anchoring the defense, playing with intensity, and delivering crucial shots in key moments.
From a financial perspective, if a team is willing to offer Ayton a contract approaching his estimated market value, the Lakers might consider letting him pursue it. However, Smart, at an estimated market value around his current contract figure, represents a potentially solid and more consistent signing for the team.
