Economist Peter Schiff challenges MicroStrategy Chair Michael Saylor’s portrayal of Bitcoin as “digital property” akin to commercial real estate, arguing it generates no practical utility or income.
Schiff’s Critique of Bitcoin’s Value
Schiff highlights a key distinction: real estate owners can occupy their properties or lease them for revenue, creating tangible economic benefits. Bitcoin, he contends, offers no such functionality as digital property.
“Commercial real estate has actual value. You can use it yourself or rent it out to someone else. What value does Bitcoin have as digital property?”
— Peter Schiff, in a recent X post
Responding to arguments about Bitcoin serving as mortgage collateral, Schiff dismisses this as flawed policy under the Trump administration, insisting collateral alone does not confer intrinsic worth.
Saylor’s Longstanding Bitcoin Advocacy
Saylor consistently frames Bitcoin as digital capital, positioning it as a viable alternative to stocks and real estate in corporate reserves. He has drawn parallels to real estate development, noting how MicroStrategy leverages Bitcoin gains to acquire more—much like developers issue debt amid rising property values.
Schiff counters that Bitcoin produces no rental income to cover such debts, underscoring its limitations compared to income-generating assets.
MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin Exposure
MicroStrategy holds 818,869 BTC, valued at $66.46 billion. The firm bought at an average price of $75,540 per coin, totaling about $62 billion including fees. This yields roughly $4.6 billion in unrealized gains at current levels.
In the first quarter, MicroStrategy posted a $38.25 per share loss, though revenue of $124.3 million exceeded estimates. During the earnings call, Saylor hinted at potential Bitcoin sales to fund dividends on preferred shares.
MicroStrategy’s enormous, publicly visible Bitcoin stash on the blockchain lays bare its treasury strategy to investors and regulators alike. While this transparency fosters market accountability, it also spotlights risks from chain analysis and public ledger exposure—issues private Bitcoin implementations like BTCX address via confidential infrastructure on networks such as Zano.
